Don’t Let Fear Control You – Control Fear Instead
Don’t let fear control you. Fear’s mission is to destroy you. It doesn’t know any mercy and it torment its victims. It doesn’t care whether you’re beautiful, rich or the most intelligent person around. It will control you regardless.
Many years ago an assignment was given to me. It was to present a speech in front of a big crowd in a massive hall. I was a shy 15-year-old girl.
I rehearsed my speech. The day came and I was ready to wow the audience. But as the time got closer and closer to me going on stage, butterfly flutters invaded my stomach. A knot also formed there. Next, my chest tightened.
Slowly, I walked to the stage. ‘I’m in control!’ I thought bravely.
My heart pounded. The beats became faster and faster. The pounding echoed loudly in my ears.
I carried on walking. When I reached the middle of the stage, I stopped.
I raised my head and I looked around at the crowd. They stared back at me. I opened my mouth. My voice disappeared. I couldn’t speak. I stood there. Frozen to the spot. I couldn’t move. Fear gripped my heart. I couldn’t remember the speech. My mind went blank.
That memory will stay with me for the rest of my life. Fear knows no mercy.
But as a child of God, you can and must control fear. You shouldn’t let fear control you. Fear is not from God. It’s a spirit. He didn’t give you a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)
Do you know that you’ve got authority to command fear to get out of your life? Not only that, but you can also command its cousins to leave as well. Fear lives with its cousins. They are shyness, timidity, self-consciousness, lack of confidence and self-doubt.
Fear can stop you from fulfilling your destiny.
I joined the worship team at my church. A few weeks ago the worship leader asked me to lead praise and worship. I knew that one day I would have to do that. But when she asked me, my heart pounded with that familiar thudding.
It’s really frustrating when you want to do something. But you’re stopped because of an annoying obstacle.
It was time for action. Enough is enough I thought!
‘Don’t let fear control you June,’ I said silently to myself. It was time for action.
These were the steps I took to kick fear and his cousins out of my life.
- I spoke to the spirit of fear and commanded it to leave me. I told fear that it had overstayed its welcome. It was time to pack its bags and go. I spoke with the authority that Jesus gave me. See Luke 10:19.
- I addressed the other relatives of fear as well and commanded them to leave.
- I declared that Jesus lives within me. And my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, fear cannot share my body with the Godhead. There’s no room for them to stay.
- I asked the Holy Spirit to take control of my spirit, soul, mind and thoughts.
- I thanked God for releasing me from the bondage of fear.
I didn’t make a big fuss about it. I just know that I can’t allow fear to keep on limiting me. It’s robbed me from progressing spiritually and mentally for too long. I refuse to be held back because of fear.
Since then, every time I feel a hint of fear creeping in, I declare that fear is no longer part of my life. It’s only in my imagination. It’s a mirage. It’s not real.
The worship leader asked me to lead praise last Sunday morning in church. And guess what? I was able to sing boldly in front of the congregation without fear rearing its ugly head. It was such a great feeling of freedom.
I know that fear will never get a foothold in my life again. I refuse to let it. I know who I am in Christ. So why should I let a small thing like fear make me feel inadequate?
This is one of the best ways of dealing with it. See yourself like a giant. And see fear like a little ant. When it tries to rear its ugly head you can crush it. Or let it crawl all over you. Take control and put an end to it.
Are you going to let fear control you. Or are you going to control fear?
If you’ve been tormented by fear, pray this prayer. “Father God I thank you for your word which says whoever the Son of Man sets free is free indeed. Jesus came so that I may have life and have it more abundantly. Therefore I will not let fear intimidate me from the abundant life which I have received.
When I gave my life to Jesus, old things passed away and all things became new. I am now a new person in Christ. He lives in me and I in Him. Fear is no longer part of my life. I take authority as a child of God and command the spirit of fear to leave me. I wasn’t given a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. I give you all the glory, honour and praise. Thank you Lord for my freedom from fear. In the name of Jesus. Amen
